HOW TO CHOOSE A DETERRENT
Gardeners and farmers the world
over compete with wildlife to harvest their crops. The ideal of
tree-ripened fruit can be a real challenge to achieve! Green
Harvest offers 2 main choices, either
exclusion or deterrence.
The choice you make will depend
upon your individual circumstance and the plant you are trying to
protect.
Deterrence is particularly useful
for ornamental plants and when the problem is widespread,
affecting many plants. It can work well on birds, possums and fruit
bats depending on the
product used.
Often more than one strategy is
needed, with the strategy changing over time, as animals can get
used to the deterrent and ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. The aim
is ‘behaviour modification’ so to be successful, a strategy must
be repeated often enough to retrain every individual animal that
is a threat to your garden. A ‘once only’ encounter may not change
forever the patterns of behaviour of an individual animal.
Starting early enough is critical; once a crop is already being
enjoyed it is very difficult to change the behaviour.
BIRDSCARE
FLASH TAPE
This product works by signalling
danger to the birds that seem to associate the reflecting sunlight
with fire. The super strong, long lasting space-age plastic tape
is bright red on one side and silver on the other. Can be used on
row crops or fruit trees by cutting pieces to length and securing
from stakes, or draping over branches or making pom-pom bunches
and tying them on. Each roll is 90 m long.

BIRD CONTROL
Exclusion is an organic, environmentally sustainable and cost
effective method for discouraging birds
and
fruit bats from your fruit trees. When using netting the
Australian Bat Conservation Society recommends that you avoid
thin nylon/monofilament netting
and
that the netting used is stretched taut over a frame, with a
mesh size less than 40 mm.
On
average a 3m tree requires 10m x 10m of netting or shadecloth.
It is necessary to join 2 pieces of 5
x 10 to achieve a 10 x 10 piece, it is easy to do this using
UV-treated shadecloth twine.
Drape the netting directly over the tree prior to
fruit ripening, however for ease of removal and tree health a
light weight frame is recommended.

POSS OFF
A
100% natural, biodegradable spray that will help deter possums. Please see
the information above about how deterrents work. The success of
this type of strategy is related to how desperate the animal is
for food. It may just prefer your roses over anything else or it
may have nothing else to eat. If this is the case no amount of
spray will help as the animal will probably eat it anyway. The bitter
herbal oils may also deter rabbits and kangaroos from eating your
plants, without harm to the animals. The spray contains plant
foods to promote re-growth at the site of attacks.
