SEED STORAGE: The best place to store seed is in a sealed container in your fridge. Seed stored in a hot garden shed or garage that can reach temperatures greater than 40° in summer will simply die. Seed stored open to the air where it can take up moisture will lose viability.

ASIAN and TROPICAL VEGETABLES FOR HOT WET SUMMERS

Seeds for Hot Humid Areas

If you are challenged by pest and disease problems in your vegetable garden during hot, humid summers, don’t give up! Green Harvest offers a range of vegetables, grown around the world in subtropical and tropical areas, that we have found to be hardy and reliable to the weather extremes of high temperature and humidity experienced in the ‘wet season’. As a general rule sow these vegetables from October through to March, to replace more temperate vegetables. Seeds suitable for these conditions are marked H for hot and humid!

Part of the problem is gardening books written by authors from cooler areas neglecting to give good advice on plant selection for northern areas of Australia. We recommend the books The Seed Savers Handbook, Tropical Food Gardens: A Guide to  Growing Fruit, Herbs and Vegetables,

Organic Vegetable Gardening or Successful Gardening in Warm Climates for the best information on subtropical vegetables.

Seeds for Hot Humid Areas

WEED ALERT

We recognise that although humans have moved around seeds and plants for centuries far from their native habitats, any plant has the potential to become a ‘weed’ outside its natural environment. We encourage you to keep this in mind, before ordering seed you should check your local government’s weed list. Also local Landcare organisations may be a source of information concerning plants considered undesirable in your area.

Gail of Port Lincoln SA

"Thank you so much for your prompt service to everyone at Green Harvest. The email service is excellent too. I hope your organisation continues to grow and prosper and provide great organic seeds and plants to help make the planet a better place."

Regards, a loyal customer!"

Miriam of Dulwich Hill NSW

"I must let you know how happy we are with the  vegetable seeds, I gave Mum some of my seeds as she was very sceptical about me and my organic seeds ("Aren't the supermarket ones good enough?") Well she has had 99 to 100% germination as opposed to 50% for the last 30 years  from supermarket ones, she was wrapped!"

Tania of Woodcroft SA

"Thank you for your excellent service. I received my seed package in 2 days! I'm very impressed with the packaging, free advice and quality of product. Some of the seeds have already started to germinate and I expect to reap a bumper harvest!"

Adam of Geebung QLD
