Cape Gooseberry  Capsicum & Chilli

 Physalis edulis syn. P. peruviana

A short-lived perennial to 1m, producing a large quantity of sweet, juicy, marble-sized golden yellow fruit. Eat fresh or as jam. Sow spring and summer. Suitable for temperate and subtropical areas.

Capsicum annum

Sow capsicum in spring in temperate and subtropical areas; sow all year in the tropics. Sow the seed 6 mm deep into seedling pots in spring, use liquid fertiliser once germinated and transplant when all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Space plants 40-50 cm apart in full sun, in rich soil and stake. Plants generally reach about 60cm in height. Keep well fertilised and watered. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as these will promote leaf growth at the expense of fruit. Pick early fruit green to encourage more fruiting. In fruit fly areas the fruit should be protected by bagging.

Capsicum 'Sweet Chocolate' Organically certified

'Sweet Chocolate' is named for the fruit that ripen to a rich, glossy chocolate brown. The fruit is sweet with a hint of spiciness. The thick walls are brick red on the inside. It is very productive and disease resistant and does well even in cooler climates. Days to harvest: 58

Capsicum ‘Corno di Toro’ / ‘Bull’s Horn’  Organically certified

Capsicum ‘Perennial’  Organically certified

'Perennial' is a tall, hardy, productive, bush capsicum that can live up to 5 years in the tropics. The fruit are 3 x 8 cm and taper to a blunt point, ripening from green to red. It is resistant to wilt and can also be used as rootstock for grafting other capsicum varieties.

CHILLI

Chillies are warm season, frost tender annuals. In temperate areas sow in early spring - inside with extra heat. In subtropical areas sow in spring. In tropical areas sow all year but avoid January - February. Seed germinates best between 18 - 35°C soil temperature. Sow chilli seed 6 mm deep into seedling pots in spring, seed usually takes 7 - 14 days for germination. Use a liquid fertiliser once germinated and transplant when all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Space plants 45 cm apart in full sun. Give moderate fertiliser and water throughout the growing season. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as these will promote leaf growth at the expense of fruit, a soil pH of 5 - 6 is preferred .

Scoville Scale

The Scoville scale is a measure of the 'hotness' of a chilli pepper or anything made from chilli peppers, i.e. Tabasco sauce (2,500 - 5,000 Scoville). The scale is named after Wilbur Scoville who developed the test in 1912.

 

Chilli 'Cayenne Long Thin’  Organically certified

'Cayenne Long Thin' is a productive chilli with 12 - 15 cm long, curved, wrinkled, fiery-hot fruit that start green and ripen to crimson. Height of chilli bush is 90 cm. This is one of the best chillies for seasoning pickles, salsa and drying as chilli powder. It is very hot, similar in heat range to Tabasco; Scoville heat scale 30,000 - 50,000 units. Days to harvest: 60 - 85 days.

Chilli ‘Hungarian Hot Wax’  Organically certified

'Hungarian Hot Wax' is a hardy, highly productive banana chilli with smooth, waxy fruits tapering to a point. The fleshy fruit, 12 cm x 3.8 cm, turn from yellow, to orange, to red when ripe. It is definitely hot, similar in heat range to Jalapeno or Paprika; Scoville heat scale 2500 - 8000 units. Days to harvest: 58 days for pale yellow fruit; 83 days for red.

Chilli ‘Jalapeno’

'Jalapeno' chillies taper to a blunt end, are 7.5 cm long and 3 cm in diameter. The fruit are glossy deep green in colour, turning bright red when ripe. The plants are sturdy and productive over a long period and begin cropping early. Plants also grow well in containers. It is a good choice for salsa and dishes where a milder chilli is preferred.  5,000 Scoville. H

Chilli ‘Magnum’  Organically certified

'Magnum' is a high yielding, habanero type chilli with a very spicy, shiny, golden orange fruit. The fruit are 6 cm long by 3 cm wide. The hardy bushes have an upright growth habit and are multi-branching. Habanero chillies have a bonnet shape. Harvest is 80 days for green fruit, 100 days for orange. Very, very hot: 200,000 - 300,000 Scoville. H
