Sweet corn can be sown in
spring after all danger of
frost has passed. Successive
plantings are possible to
extend the harvest until
January in most areas.
Sow
all year in the
tropics. Suitable for
temperate, subtropical and
tropical areas.
Direct sow in full sun, 2-4
cm deep, space 20-30 cm
apart in rows 60-90 cm
apart. Block planting
improves pollination and
gives well-filled cobs.
Prepare soil with compost
and well-rotted manure. Once
the first node on the stem
shows root nodulation, hill
the plants up to 25-30 cm
deep. Count 18 days from
when the silk appears and
start checking for ripeness,
the kernel should be milky.
Sweet Corn ‘Gladiator’ F1
Not to WA, TAS
'Gladiator’
produces large cobs of
golden corn on a hardy and
rust resistant plant. A
’supersweet’ hybrid,
the type commonly sold in
supermarkets, it contains
about twice the amount of
sugar of older varieties. It
is also slower to convert
sugar to starch, so retains
its sweetness longer. It
should be grown at a
different time to other
sweet corn as
cross-pollination will
reduce its sweetness.
This is untreated hybrid
seed with a high
germination.

all danger of frost has
passed;
in tropical areas sow during
the dry season. Suitable for temperate,
subtropical and tropical
areas.

apart if on a trellis, 1m
apart if planted into raised
mounds. Growing on a trellis
reduces fungal problems,
spraying regularly with
seaweed also helps.

and well-rotted manure;
cucumbers dislike acidity
and needs frequent watering.
Pinch out the terminal bud
to encourage branching.
Harvest cucumbers daily with
2 cm of stem to reduce water
loss and improve storage of
