Radish is a hardy vegetable,
very easy to grow.
The flowers
are attractive to beneficial insects.
Radish is sown in early autumn and
spring, avoid hot weather. Sow direct
where it is to grow 12 mm (½”) deep.
Thin seedlings to 2.5 - 5 cm apart. Keep the row
short and sow small crops every 2 to 3
weeks. Keep soil moist to avoid
toughness, it prefers a rich,
well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 -
6.5, mulch between the rows. Radish is
usually eaten raw, harvest while young
and tender. Radish can be inter-planted
with other crops such as carrots or
beetroot for a fast harvest.

Radish ‘Podding’ Organically
certified
Raphinus caudatus
Syn. Mongri, Snake Radish, Rat’s Tail
An unusual radish that is grown for its delicious, crisp and mildly pungent pods; no edible root is produced. The tall plants produce
large yields of 20 cm long, green pods with a purplish tinge. The pods make an interesting addition to raw vegetable
platters and salads or can be lightly cooked in stir-fries. The pods can also be pickled. The flowers are attractive to beneficial insects.
Originally grown as a
medicinal plant, rhubarb is
now used mainly for
desserts. Prepare a bed in
a sunny well-drained
position by digging
well-rotted compost or
animal manure through the
bed as rhubarb is a ‘hungry’
feeder. Sow seed in spring,
2.5 cm deep directly where
it is to grow, or sow in
trays, covering lightly with
seed raising mix. Space
plants at 90 x 90 cm.
Water well in dry weather.
Apply a mulch of well-rotted
manure in autumn and spring.
Plants should be divided
after 4-5 years. More information
.....
Rhubarb is a cool climate
perennial and the best
colour stalks occur with a
temperature of about 10°C.
It will grow as far north as
the subtropics but the
colour will not be as good.
It is best to give it
partial shade in subtropical
areas. It is not suitable
for tropical areas as it
requires a cold period to be
productive.
Caution:
Only the rhubarb stalks
should be eaten and are
better
be cooked. Rhubarb
leaves are poisonous and
should never be eaten or fed
to livestock or poultry.
Rhubarb ‘Victoria’
‘Victoria’ is noticeably
sweeter and milder then
other rhubarb. It produces
prolific yields of thick,
tender stalks with a
rosy-red sheen that
gradually turn to pink and
then to green toward the
leaf tip.

ROSELLA
'Red Drops'
Organically certified
Hibiscus sabdariffa
syn. Queensland jam
plant,
Jamaican tea, karkade
Rosella is an annual shrub
to 2m
with attractive yellow
hibiscus-like flowers. The
plants are vigorous and easy
to grow. The calyx (fleshy
cover surrounding the seed
pod) is used to make jam,
cordial and wine. Dried the
red calyx
can be used for herb tea and
is high in vitamin C. To
prepare it, strip off the
red calyx from the seedpod
and dry it in a food drier
or a slow oven until crisp.
Seeds can be roasted and
ground into flour. Young
leaves can be steamed and
are known as Red Sorrel in
the Pacific.
Sow seed in early spring, as
it needs a long growing
season and takes
at least 5 months frost-free
to fruit.
Bottom heat will be required
to get the seed germinated in
cooler areas.
Suitable for warm temperate,
subtropical
and
tropical
areas. See here for
jam and cordial recipe
and
growing information.
