FRUIT TREE CARE
Winter
is a good time to care for your trees. Begin by sharpening secateurs, applying linseed oil to any wooden handles and making sure the ladder is reliable.
General pruning rules:
-
Prune all dead or damaged wood, as well as suckers from below the graft.
-
Remove branches growing towards the centre of the tree and over-crowded branches, especially if rubbing together.
-
Prune out narrow-angled branch crotches, as these harbour pests and can break under the weight of fruit; aim for a 60° angle where the branch joins the trunk.
-
Shorten back last season's growth; it is a good idea to keep stone fruits under 3m in height to improve the ease of harvesting and protection from fruit fly.
-
Don't risk losing valuable tools, always wear a tool pouch. -
Check for borer damage.
-
Wipe blades after use with an oily rag to prevent rust.
