Makrut Lime UT
Citrus hystrix
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
Syn. kaffir lime.
A type of citrus native to South-East Asia with a long history of uses including cooking, perfumery and medicine. The fruit and leaves have an intense and very pleasant citrus fragrance. The crushed leaves are traditionally used in curry paste but don't stop there - add it to pesto, dry the leaves to use in herb salt, candy the peel, make marmalade and use the rind to flavour desserts and ice cream. The hardy trees grow to 4 m tall, tolerate light frost and will grow as far south as southern Victoria, in a sheltered microclimate. Trees are self-pollinated and suit backyards and orchards. They can be pruned to 2 m high for use as a large container plant.

Mint - Moroccan UT
Mentha spicata var. crispa
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
Syn. tuareg mint, maghrebi mint.
Moroccan Mint is a hardy, spreading, herbaceous perennial herb with a sweet, crisp, minty taste. The leaves are smaller than spearmint and the flowers are lavender and appear in mid-summer. It grows 40-60 cm high. We recommend growing all mints in a container such as large saucer as they are fast spreading, vigorous plants although Moroccan is a more compact plant than some others. It is tolerant of a range of soil types and will grow from full sun to a semi-shaded position. It is one of the most useful of the culinary mints and besides the traditional Moroccan Tea can be used in sauces, potato salad, watermelon juices and cucumber sambal. To prepare Moroccan tea, green tea is first brewed, then boiled with sugar, and then fresh mint is added and the mixture allowed to steep for several minutes before serving. It is easy to dry or freeze some for use in winter when the plant is semi-dormant. The flowers are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Mint - Native UT
Mentha satureioides
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
Syn. native pennyroyal, bush mint.
This is native herb or bushfood of southern and eastern Australia. It is an herbaceous perennial growing in clumps to 30 cm high. It has the advantage of being able to be used in very similar ways to common garden mint without the problems of common mint running everywhere. Tiny native bees are attracted to the small white flowers that appear over the summer. The fragrant leaves can be used for herb tea, or any recipe that calls for mint. Use it with caution though as it is closely related to pennyroyal.

Mint - Pennyroyal UT
Mentha pulegium
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
Syn. fleabane, lurk in the ditch, squawmint, mosquito plant, pudding grass.
Pennyroyal is a low growing, to 15 cm high, groundcover perennial with pretty mauve flowers. It prefers moist, humus-rich soils in semi-shade and will continue to spread into areas with these suitable growing conditions. The small, glossy, green leaves are very aromatic to walk on. Pennyroyal is an effective insect deterrent and can be strewn anywhere ants are a problem. Dry some leaves to deter silverfish from bookshelves. It is also considered a good mosquito and flea repellent. Grow it in damp areas of the garden where mossies are a nuisance. Like all mints we recommend growing it in a container such as large saucer to keep it under control. Pennyroyal should not be used as food as it is considered toxic, to people, pets and poultry. This is not surprising given its usefulness as a pest control.

Mint - Peppermint UT
Mentha x piperita
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
Peppermint is a spreading, herbaceous perennial herb with a strong minty taste. We recommend growing it in a container such as large saucer as it is a fast spreading, vigorous plant. Most members of the mint family are best restrained in some way to stop them taking over. It prefers to be kept moist in a semi-shaded position. Harvest the fresh leaves to make herb tea and flavour cold drinks. It is easy to dry or freeze some for use in winter when the plant is dormant. Available as seed...

Mint - Rust Free UT
Mentha rubra raripila
Not to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS or WA
'Rust free' Mint is a useful addition to any herb garden as it is rarely impacted by the fust fungus that plagues so many mints. It grows to 45 cm high with pale-pink flowers; the leaves and stems are tinged with red. It is a pretty, spreading, herbaceous perennial with a minty taste similar to spearmint. We recommend growing it in a container such as large saucer as it is a vigorous plant. Most members of the mint family are best restrained in some way to stop them taking over. It prefers to be kept moist in a lightly shaded position. Harvest the fresh leaves to make herb tea and flavour cold drinks.

Mint - Vietnamese UT
Persicaria odorata syn. Polygonum odoratum

Vietnamese mint has a peppery minty taste and is very popular in Vietnamese and other Asian style cooking. It is a creeping, herbaceous perennial herb 15 - 30 cm high, that does best in subtropical and tropical areas. It is a good idea to grow it in a container such as large saucer as it is vigorous and spreads reasonably fast, in a similar way to mints.
